SMU men's soccer head coach Kevin Hudson and striker Jose Ortiz met the media after Ortiz's hat trick lifted the Mustangs to a 4-0 rout of Oral Roberts in the season opener for each team.

Mustangs Shut Out ORU, 4-0, In Season Opener Led By Jose Ortiz Hat Trick

Dallas (SMU) – SMU men's soccer team opened its season in convincing fashion, earning a 4-0 shutout victory over Oral Roberts Thursday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

Jose Ortiz led the way for the Mustangs with a three-goal performance opening the season, scoring in the first 22 seconds of play.

Shortly after, in the 10th minute, Ortiz scored off a diving header assisted by Alexander Petraeus and Henry Howell. Ortiz completed the hat trick in the 64th minute after cashing in on a penalty kick.

"Jose was excellent," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "We knew he had it in him. He put himself in good spots. He's consistently done that, so to get a couple of good goals takes a little weight off his shoulders and shows the belief the team had in him."

Just before the halftime break, freshman Elton Hedstrom scored his first collegiate goal, heading one in the left side of the net from a Kyran Pinho and Roman Knox assist.

The Mustangs improve to 10-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
