Men's Soccer Staff Adds Phil Wolf
Former NAIA Coach of the Year Come To The Hilltop
May 6, 2009
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer coach Tim McClements today announced the hiring of assistant coach Phil Wolf, who moves to SMU after eight seasons as head coach at Azusa Pacific.
Wolf led Azusa Pacific to the NAIA National Championship and a 20-1-1 record in 2007 en route to Brine-NAIA Coach of the Year honors. The 2007 NAIA championship was the third-straight appearance in the national title game for Wolf. Over his eight seasons as a head coach, Wolf has posted a 120-29-18 record and was named Golden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times (2001, 2007, 2008). At Azusa Pacific, Wolf coached the 2008 NAIA National Player of the Year and has had one players selected in each of the past two MLS SuperDrafts. Previous to his tenure at Azusa Pacific, Wolf was an assistant at Wheaton College, where he was a part of the coaching staff that won the 1997 NCAA Division III Championship and set an NCAA record with a 66-match unbeaten streak.
"We are excited that Phil decided to join our staff," said McClements. "He has an outstanding soccer background as both a player and a coach. He excelled as a player at both the collegiate and professional levels and has been part of two National Championship programs as a coach. Phil will be a great addition to our staff."
Wolf was a three-time All-American as a player at Wheaton College and was a member of Wheaton's 1990 Division III Final Four team. Wolf graduated with the third-most points in school history (135), and his teams posted a record of 77-10-6 during his time at Wheaton. He played five years of professional soccer, splitting time between the NPSL and the USL.

Seems he played where Coach McClements played (Wheaton), so I assume they have similar scheme ideas.

It also looks like this guy can coach. Perhaps he's the bench coach to help McClements this fall.

So if this guy played in Indiana and coached in California, does this mean we'll stop recruiting the fountain of talent that is north Texas?

Hope you're wrong. We're the only D-I team in Texas, and there's boatloads of soccer talent here. We should have our pick of virtually every player in Texas, assuming they can get in academically. Sure, teams like Wake Forest and Tulsa and Maryland and UCLA and Indiana come in and pluck a stud player every now and then, but we should be cleaning up on top Texas players.
We got some Texas kids in this year's class, and I assume they're good. I have no problem with out-of-state players in any sport, but when we have such a deep pool of local talent, and we're the only team in the whole state, I hope we don't bypass the locals guys too often. There's too many of them, and they're too good.

Welcome to SMU, coach Wolf.
Hope you know some recruits who can score.

Phil is the brother of Westmont College coach Dave Wolf who lost his home in the devastating Tea Fire that struck Santa Barbara last November.
Here is an account of the last time their two teams met, just four days after the fire.

Good luck to coach Wolf at SMU!

Hope so. There were times last year when we looked incredibly unorganized on both ends of the field.
