SMU W-Soccer Falls To No. 14 OSU

Sept. 10, 2010

Box Score vs. OSU

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to No. 14 Oklahoma State Friday night at Westcott Field. Sophomore Kenzie Scovill scored her first goal of the season for the Mustangs.

Scovill scored in the 68th minute for SMU on a cross from Lauren Shepherd to cut the lead to one. SMU had multiple chances to tie the game, but the Cowgirl defense held strong, denying the Pony comeback. Scovill was one of four Mustangs with multiple shots, firing a team-high four shots at the Oklahoma State goal.

Goalkeeper Courtney Webb had a strong performance between the pipes, collecting six saves as the Mustangs' last line of defense.

The Mustangs move to 3-2-1 on the season, while Oklahoma State improves to 5-1-0.

SMU will face New Mexico Sunday at 2 p.m. at Westcott Field. The Mustangs will be trying to extend their perfect record against the Lobos; SMU is 3-0-0 all-time against New Mexico.

A fantastic effort by the Mustangs. If we play with that sort of energy for the rest of the season we will win a lot of games.

You can tell the freshman players are getting a lot more confident out there - particularly Courtney Smith. She sent in a perfect feed from the free kick right at 90 minutes that in all honesty should have been the equalizer. Plus, her throw-ins from 20 yards in are just as good as corners...

Lauren Shepherd's run down the right side to set up the goal was simply awesome.

Without the benefit of replay, it is hard to tell if Courtney Webb made the right decision to come out on OSU's first goal, but in all fairness she did also make a fantastic save on another breakaway in the second half.

The team really looks like it is coming together nicely. Let's keep it up!

The Mustangs looked Top 25 last night.

I agree. It was different last night.

More speed. More fighting for headers in midfield. More tackling.

I would like to think it is a sign of things to come based on this fantastic freshman class finally getting up to speed, and not just the team getting jacked up to play a Top 15 team.

We will see.
