ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Behind a strong team defensive effort led by Sidney Stewart, the SMU volleyball team defeated Sacramento State, 3-1, in its final game of the Lobo Comcast Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
Stewart, a junior libero from Houston, Texas, tallied a career-high 39 digs in SMU's (7-2) victory. Besides Stewart, the Mustangs had three other players with 19 or more digs in the match to amass a club total of 113. As a team, the Ponies held Sacramento State to a .144 hitting percentage in the win. Junior Kelli Becerra, who had 19 scoops of her own, finished the match with a season-high 53 assists.
The Mustangs won a hard-fought victory over Sacramento State (5-6) with no set being decided by more than five points. After splitting the first two sets, the Ponies rallied to take the final two sets by the narrow margins of 25-22 and 25-23.
With today's win, SMU wraps up the Lobo Comcast Challenge with a 2-1 record during the two-day event. The Mustangs next take the court on Tuesday night, when they travel to face Wichita State with the match beginning at 7 p.m.
