Oct. 10, 2010
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team defeated Colorado College 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. Junior Kaitlyn Eidson scored two goals while sophomore Shelby Hartweck added a third. With the win, SMU moves to 9-4-2 on the year and is now 4-2-0 in Conference USA action.
"It's a good win," said head coach Brent Erwin. "I think it was a very hard game. Sunday games in this league are hard. I thought we came out and played very, very well for the first 10 minutes; obviously, we got goal in the first minute. But then the rest of the second half, we didn't play well. We got scored on to start off the second half and were kind of on our back foot for the first 15 minutes. They made some changes tactically, and we caught up to it. We scored another good goal off a corner kick, and really, from then on, we were always on our front foot and got the third goal there at the end."
Eidson opened the scoring with a header just 1:20 in after a corner kick. Kenzie Scovill and Logan May earned assists on the goal. Eidson added a second goal in the 72nd minute when she headed in a corner kick from Lauren Shepherd. The goals were Eidson's third and fourth of the season. Eidson has now scored in three consecutive games and has netted the game-winner in each of those contests. The assist was Shepherd's team-leading fifth helper of the season.
"She's been great," Erwin said of Eidson. "I tell them `good teams score on set pieces,' and she scored on set pieces. We couldn't ask for any more from her. She's just been great all year."
Hartweck added insurance for the Mustangs with her goal in the 84th minute. Senior Kristin Medeiros fed a ball to Hartweck, who shot the ball into the far upper 90 for her third goal of the season.
Colorado College's goal came in the 47th minute when Lauren DiGregorio headed in a goal off a Tiger corner kick to tie the game at one.
