Mustangs Finish Second At Clover Cup
Haglund Posts Second Consecutive Third Place Finish
March 10, 2013
MESA, Ariz. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs finished second at the Clover Cup on Sunday and freshman Jenny Haglund was in contention for a win for the second consecutive tournament. Haglund finished tied for third after entering the final round as the tournament leader.
Haglund shot a five-under 67 yesterday to take the tournament lead, but a final round 76 dropped her from the lead. Still, the freshman has impressed as of late, also finishing tied for third at the Central District Invitational on Feb. 19. The native of Sweden won Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors on Feb. 20.
Melanie White finished 11th and Felicia Espericueta also earned a top-25 finish. The Mustangs fought difficult winds and hole locations on Sunday, but head coach Jeanne Sutherland was happy with the effort her team showed.
"I was really proud of our team," Sutherland said. "They worked hard to get their scores."
Sutherland does see more room for improvement, but can't deny that her team has played well in 2012-13 and has made taken huge strides forward.
"We have to play three rounds as well as we play two," Sutherland said. "We started the season playing only one round well, now we're up to two, so that's good."
No. 3 Oklahoma won the tournament, and Tulsa's Kristina Merkle won individual medalist honors, finishing at six-under par.
