Feb. 16, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) – Sophomore Hristina Dishkova and freshman Dasha Sharapova defeated Redhawk senior Nimisha Mohan and junior Christine Guerrazzi, 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles match as the No. 75 SMU women’s tennis team fell to Miami (OH), 4-1 in Dallas at the Northwood Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

In addition, sophomore Yana Erkeeva and freshman Macie Elliott clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs and improved to 7-3 as a duo as they defeated sophomore Ana Rajkovic and freshman Andreea Badileanu, 8-4.

Following the doubles matches, Miami won the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles matches to win the dual. SMU fell to 1-6 with the loss, while the Redhawks improved to 5-2.

The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow as the team hosts No. 31 Memphis at 12 p.m. in both teams’ first American Athletic Conference match. The match will be played at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.

SMU and Memphis last met on April 23, 2010 in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament. The No. 1 seeded Mustangs swept the Tigers, 4-0 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

What is up with our women's tennis team?
Losing our assistant to be the assistant at North Texas?
Losses to Northwestern La State, A&M-Corpus Christi and Miami-Ohio?

Are we going to go 1-17 again?

At least we didn't default in any matches yesterday!

I assume injuries have been a big part of it. Hopefully things turn around quickly.

1-8 & halfway to a repeat of the one-win 2012 season and can't even go .500 against the Southland teams.

Meanwhile our previous coach (who wanted to stay but who we didn't try to retain) is building a powerhouse at Auburn and her SMU assistant coach who was supposedly interested in our job but was not interviewed has Houston ranked 30 in his 2nd season. Our most recent assistant Jefferson Hammond who did very well at TCU as a HC and would have been a great replacement when Gyulai gets canned bolted for Denton. Probably didn't want to stay on a sinking ship.

Time for some changes. Sweet 16 to terrible overnight makes me depressed.
