Women's soccer wins first-round NCAA game

SMU Advances to Second-Round Game on Sunday

College Station, Texas - The SMU women's soccer team advances to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament after a 2-0 victory over McNeese State Friday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Stadium in College Station, Texas. Win the win, SMU improves to 17-4-1 while McNeese State closes out its season with a 10-7-2 record.
SMU got on the scoreboard early (3:32 mark) when senior forward Olivia O'Rear recorded her 13th goal of the season with the assist credited to freshman Kim Peabody. The Mustangs got an insurance goal at the 81:46 mark when senior Susanne Collins collected her first goal of the season with a shot in the box off a Marisa Schieda centering pass.
The Mustangs dominated the shot count, 18-5, taking four corner kicks and did not allow a single Cowgirl corner kick.
O'Rear now moves into sixth on SMU's all-time career list for goals scored with 39. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Gunter records her 11th shutout of the season. As a team, SMU totals 13 shutouts for the season, tying a program record for shutouts in a single season which has occurred twice (1987, 1999) since the program's inception in 1986.
SMU will play the winner of Friday's Grambling State-Texas A&M contest. Sunday's second-round game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
