An unfortunate situation.

Eric Frimpong, a starter on UC Santa Barbara's 2006 NCAA Division I championship team, was arrested last Saturday for investigation of rape and was released after $100,000 bail was posted.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office reported detectives developed probable cause to arrest Frimpong for rape following an investigation of a reported rape of a UCSB student.

Robert Sanger, Frimpong's attorney, described the incident as "totally out of character" with Frimpong and said his client cooperated with authorities, provided a DNA sample and maintained his innocence. He also described the report detailing the allegations against Frimpong as "one-sided" and "unfair."

The 21-year-old Frimpong, a native of Sunyani, Ghana, was selected by the Kansas City Wizards in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft.

He was brilliant in UCSB's upset of SMU in the tournament this year, marking Bruno Guarda basically out of the game, which is no small task.
