Women's soccer falls to Arizona State

SMU Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss
Arizona State Rallies Past Ponies, 4-1
Sept. 14, 2007
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team struck first with a goal in the game's first minute, but suffered its first loss of the season Friday night when Arizona State rallied with four second-half goals to beat the Mustangs, 4-1, at Westcott Field.
The loss dropped SMU to 2-1 this season.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard first, when senior midfielder Kimber Bailey was taken down in the penalty box and converted the ensuing penalty kick to give SMU a 1-0 lead 56 seconds into the game; the Mustangs held that lead through the first half.
Arizona State rallied in the second half. In the 49th minute, Kylelyn Felts lifted a corner kick to the far corner of the penalty box, where Carly Kallas rose above the defense and headed the ball through heavy traffic and into the net to tie the game at 1-1. Kallas then scored the eventual game-winner in the 71st minute, when she headed in a long free kick from Kylla Sjoman.
ASU added a pair of insurance goals in the game's waning minutes. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter tried to clear the ball off the goal line in the 78th minute, but the ball hit ASU's Courtney Crane's torso and bounced into the net. Then, in the 82nd minute, Karin Volpe dribbled deep into the left corner and curled a crossing pass back beyond the top of the penalty box, where Alissa Oldenkamp one-timed a blast into the SMU goal.
The Mustangs will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday, when SMU hosts Texas Tech at Westcott Field. For a complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
