Three Mustangs Invited To Major League Soccer Combine

Chevannes, Sandbo, Shuleva invited to square off with nation's best

DALLAS (SMU) - Three members of the SMU men's soccer team are among the 54 college seniors who have been invited to take part in the Major League Soccer Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jan. 11-15. Senior defender Adrian Chevannes, senior goalkeeper Steve Sandbo and senior midfielder Ben Shuleva all have been invited to show their skills in preparation for the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

Chevannes expanded his reputation as one of the most versatile players in the nation during his senior season on the Hilltop. A defender when he transferred to SMU from Clemson University, Chevannes moved to the front line and became the Mustangs' second-leading scorer in the 2006 season. When injuries forced head coach Schellas Hyndman to shuffle his lineup, Chevannes moved back to his defender spot and immediately established himself as one of the premier defenders in Conference USA, earning first-team all-conference recognition, and still scored a pair of goals from his defensive position.

Sandbo anchored the SMU defense in 2007 with six shutouts, tying him for the conference lead. He also posted the second-best goals-against average among Conference USA netminders: 1.00 and was named third-team All-Conference USA.

Shuleva is one of the premier defensive midfielders in the nation, and increased his offensive production enough to earn a Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week award and postseason first-team All-Conference USA honors. A standout in the classroom as well as on the field, Shuleva also was named to C-USA's All-Academic team, and was named third-team Academic All-America by CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine.

SMU, the only Division I athletic program in Dallas, Texas, sponsors 17 sports and has been ranked as the top school in its conference for 10 straight years in the Director's Cup overall athletic rankings. So how many of these guys get drafted? Surely Shuleva will, and presumably Chevannes will, too. Sandbo late maybe?
