Mustangs Improve to 12-6 With the Win
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (SMU)--The SMU men's tennis team pulled off a huge upset Saturday, defeating No. 36 Cal, 4-2, in the third annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Classic.
The match was delayed three times because of rainy conditions, but finally the teams were able to take to the courts. Because of the threat of additional rain, the teams opted to play only singles.
Robin Fahgen was the first finisher for the Mustangs, defeating Eoin Heavey in straight sets at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 5, Chris Hooshyar followed with a straight-sets win of his own, downing Bozhidar Katsarov, 6-1, 6-3.
Adolfo Solares played at No. 6 and fought through his first set, but eventually dropped to Ken Nakahara, 7-5, 6-1.
David Kuczer extended his winning streak, upsetting No. 96 Kallim Stewart in the first slot, 6-2, 6-4. Alex Skrypko squeaked out a win at No. 3, defeating Pedro Zerbini, 6-4, 7-5, clinching the match for SMU. Oivind Alver dropped his match at No. 4, falling to Jonathan Dahan, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(6).
"We played with awesome energy today," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "It was our best team effort of the year. As a team, we just played super tennis. It was good to see Adolfo back on the court after battling injury the last three weeks. It was just an incredible team effort. The four guys who won their matches today played outstanding tennis. I would say those four guys played at or near their personal best today. To beat a team like Cal is just fanstastic."
