Kelly Kraft of Denton holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th green Sunday to post a final-round 3-under-par 68 and win the 99th Texas State Amateur at Houston Country Club by two.

The SMU freshman and Conference USA Freshman of the Year shot a 5-under-par 75-69-71-68—283 to beat John Peterson of Fort Worth, a freshman at LSU, who shot 73-72-71-69—285. Kraft was six shots out of the first-round lead Thursday night.

Former Longhorn Jhonattan Vegas shot a 4-over-par 78-68-71-75—292 to tie for 11th.

Defending champion Charlie Holland, a junior next season at Texas, shot a 10-over 76-73-78-71—298 to tie for 32nd.

Houston has the next Texas Golf Association championship, too. The Public Links is scheduled for June 26 through 29 at historic Memorial Park.
