Somewhere in Georgia, former Mustang and Olympic gold medal winner Steve Lundquist is smiling. :)

This was one of the most exciting individual sporting events I have ever seen. The last leg of the relay was unbelievable. This is why I would like to see some big donors come in and get SMU some new swimming facilities. This is the type of action I recall seeing when I was on campus.

It was an amazing event. Loved it. I also loved the fact that one of the French swimmers was quoted that they were going to destroy the Americans.

Typical France, what they start, the United States always has to finish.

Those frogs just need to keep a lid on it.

Thx mrydel for the endorsement.

Even if someone isn't knowledgeable about swimming or even a fan of the sport, that was one of most exciting sporting moments I can recall. Lezak, as the anchor, swam out of his mind. To reel in the world champion French swimmer was all will and guts.

SMU has Olympic swimmers representing USA, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil, etc. With the still unfortunate loss of men's track and field, swimming and diving remains one of our most enduring Olympic sports. The need for a competitive facility to recruit, train and compete remains the highest priority for Men's and Women's teams, if we want to remain a Top Ten team.

Every four years, swimming does the USA proud. The same can happen for SMU annually.

jason lezak's mother was my sixth grade teacher, pretty cool to see him do something like that. the race was incredible and so much better since the french talked smack before the race

My freshman year the #1 ranked USC Trojans came to Perkins. We beat them on the final relay with Paul Tietze swimming an incredible anchor leg to beat Olympian John Nabor. The place was nuts the entire meet and on the final leg of the relay, it was noisier than any event I've ever been to. After that, I made it to many swimming meets. Its a great sport when teams compete at the highest level.

EastStang,

Thx for the story. It is hard to describe the noise, intensity and spirit that can be experienced inside a natatorium. The shouts bounce off the walls and water surface. Swimmers respond to the vibrations, believe it or not.

That is the beauty of non-revenue/Olympic sports, where the career is short and is ideally suited for college days. Scott Lezak will be remembered forever because of this individual effort in coming from behind to win this relay. Like your story, SMU swim meets have created similar excitement in the past.
