New coach

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer coach Tim McClements has filled out his coaching staff withe addition of former star SMU midfielder Giampaulo Pedroso as an assistant coach.
Pedroso was a second-team All-America selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 1990. The Niterói, Brazil, native also was named to the NSCAA All-Region team in 1990 and 1991, and remains tied for fifth in SMU history with 28 career assists.
Following his graduation in 1993, Pedroso enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a player in the Major Indoor Soccer League with the Dallas Sidekicks and Houston Hotshots. He helped his teams reach the MISL finals in eight of his 10 professional seasons, and helped bring three league championships to Dallas.
He then worked for Major League Soccer's FC Dallas, most recently as the club's Director of Soccer Business Development.
In addition to his playing career, Pedroso has made a name for himself in coaching circles, working with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) for the North Texas State Soccer Association (NTSSA) and South Texas Youth Soccer Association (STYSA), serving as a scout in the Minority Youth Identification Program for the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), and coaching at The Highlands School in Irving, Texas and with several club teams in in the Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth areas.
"Giampaulo brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, from his career as a college and professional player, and the time he spent with FC Dallas gives him a unique perspective into coaching at the professional level," McClements said. "In addition, it's always a good feeling when you can welcome home a former player to coach at his alma mater. Giampaulo knows what it means to play for SMU, and will be a real benefit to the players on our 2008 team."
The Mustangs play their first two home games of the season this weekend, hosting George Mason at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Oakland at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Prego's Express Italian Men's Soccer Invitational at Westcott Field.
