SMU Men's Soccer Adds Three
Two transfers among Mustangs' new additions

Jan. 26, 2009

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team has added three new players, head coach Tim McClements announced, including a pair of transfers from Div. I schools.

Basile Riboud is a 5-foot-7 midfielder from Paris, France, who spent five years in the soccer academy of la Berrichonne de Chateauroux. Riboud also played two years for the Under-15 team of the Paris Saint Germain club team, and played in the quarterfinals of the French National Cup "Gambardella" in 2006.

Tate McMullen is a 5-foot-9 midfielder from Lewisville, Texas, who spent the past two years playing for the University of San Francisco. Over the past two seasons, McMullen had a pair of assists while playing in 23 games for the Dons, 13 of which he started. The former Marcus High School grad has exceptional speed, and can play midfield or forward.

Josue Soto is a 5-foot-10 midfielder from Monterrey, Mexico, who transferred to SMU after playing two seasons at Campbell (N.C.) University. The former Houston Dynamo Academy player had 45 points on 14 goals and 17 assists over two seasons for the Camels, including four game-winning goals. In his freshman season, he was named the A-SUN Conference Freshman of the Year, was named to the conference's all-freshman and all-conference teams, and earned second-team Freshman All-America honors from collegesoccernews.com. In his sophomore season, he was the team's second-leading scorer.

These guys especially the kid from Houston/Mexico sound strong. Coupled with AJ Nelson who I discussed earlier this would be a good class. I wonder how many we will bring in this year after the two large classes in 2007 and 8. There was an article about Nelson in the DMN a few days ago where he indicated he is getting a full ride. There can't be a lot of ship money available right now you would think.

To keep this all together, here is my Nelson post.

Various soccer sites are reporting that T J Nelson out of Garland has committed to SMU. A 4 star defender, he is on the US Under 17 national team. A major committment.

I hear Soto, in particular, is an exceptionally talented guy, but that all three can contribute ... at least according to the dad of one of our players who has seen them.

Three upperclassmen who can conceivably contribute right away. Should be an upgrade to the team. Adding in an Under 17, National player on the backline helps as well. Can't fault McClements recruiting skills.

More SMU commits

Ben Hill, Dallas Texans. As I recall he committed over a year ago and is a highly regarded forward prospect.

Bryan Ponce He is a defender who plays for the Pateadores Club Team out of Southern CA.

Guess I had better take a 'whiz' so you can eat again.

What excuse will the rainbowers have next season if TM blows off another season with an unacceptable performance.

GO PONIES!!!

A fourth soccer signee has surfaced, Blake Milton a F/MF from Klein Oak High School in Houston. Blake plays for the Texans SC in the U. S. Soccer Development Academy league. Fellow signee Ben Hill plays for the Dallas Texans Academy team and Bryan Ponce plays for the Southern CA Pateadores Academy team. This is a special league set up by U.S. Soccer to develop future professional players.

I am curious if the Funes brothers, Gabriel and Ramiro will play college soccer. They are both on the F.C. Dallas academy team. Gabriel is one of the top forwards in the country. They are from Argentina and may not go the college route. It would be something however if they ended up at SMU.

The four commits I had previously mentioned Hill, Nelson, Ponce and Milton have been identified by SMU as its only highschool signees for 2009. Both Ponce and Nelson are top 100 players. We also have three transfers for a total of 7 new players. Transfer Josue Soto is supposedly a very strong player and a MLS prospect. His addition, makes this a very strong class.
