Sambol Qualifies For U.S. Amateur
Mustang Looks To Follow In Knost's Footsteps

July 30, 2009

EULESS (SMU) - SMU's Marc Sambol won the U.S. Amateur qualifying event at the Texas Star Golf Club, shooting 66-68 to finish 7-under 134, and qualified for the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship with the win.

Sambol bested LSU All-American John Peterson by one shot over 36 holes at the par-71 layout to earn the victory.

This year's Amateur will be held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., from Aug. 24-30.

Sambol, who was named Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week in March after taking medalist honors at the Northwood Spring Invite, will look to follow in the footsteps of Mustang golfing legend Colt Knost, who won the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship.

Sambol and Stewart missed the cut at +15 (199), and at Buckley shot a +16 (215). Anyway, it was great for them to qualify and certainly is a good sign for the future of the golf program in years to come.
