Aug. 22, 2009
HOUSTON - Pana Vasquez, playing in front of his hometown fans, broke a scoreless draw in the 90th minute to give SMU a 1-0 victory over Denver in an exhibition match played at Houston's Meyer Park.
"It's nice to get a win. Right now, we're not where we need to be, but we're headed in the right direction," said head coach Tim McClements. "It's always great to come down to Houston, where a bunch of our players are from, and come down here and play in front of our fans from here."
The teams played an evenly matched game, but the Mustangs had the only breakthrough as time was winding down in the second half. Goalkeeper Craig Hill made several saves and did not allow a goal in 65 minutes of action. Kevin McMullen stopped Denver's best chance to score with a diving save after a breakaway in the 75th minute.
SMU will play their last exhibition match next Saturday at 5 p.m. against Central Arkansas at Westcott Field. The exhibition match against Central Arkansas will be followed by the third-annual Jordan Mann Alumni Game, which will kick off at 7 p.m.
SMU will start the regular season on Sept. 4 against #3 Akron in the Tulsa Tournament.
