Volleyball Extends Win Streak To 11 Over North Texas With 3-1 Victory

DALLAS (SMU) - Dana Powell continued her hot streak, finishing with her fourth-straight double-double, and the Mustangs turned up the heat against North Texas, taking the fourth set 25-11 to claim the first match of 2009 in Moody Coliseum 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-11).
In the fourth set, SMU opened on a 14-6 run, taking complete control of what proved to be the deciding set. The Mustangs closed out the Mean Green on an 11-5 run, led by Powell's hot hand. The sophomore recorded six kills and three digs, while Kelli Becerrarecorded 12 assists, while the Mustangs hit .382, a match high.
With the match tied 1-1 and the third set tied 11-11, the Mustangs out-scored the Mean Green 14-7 to take a one set lead, their first in the match and one they never relinquished. Powell and Kathryn Wilkersoneach hit five kills in the set and the Mustangs hit .333.
Down one set to none and trailing 16-13 in the second set, the Mustangs went on a tear, scoring eight of the next 11 points to take a 21-19 lead before taking the set 25-22. Oliver and Powell each knocked down eight kills, while Wilkerson and Kendra Kahanek added six each, to lead the Mustangs to the crucial set victory.
North Texas took an early 1-0 lead in the Mustangs' home opener, edging the Mustangs 25-22. With the match tied 6-6, the Mean Green took a 13-10 lead. The Mustangs cut the lead to one, 14-13, but could never get the tying point.
Becerra finished the match with 46 assists, 19 digs, a team-high, and three blocks, while Powell led the Mustangs with 19 kills. The sophomore added 15 digs and a block. Wilkerson recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Sidney Stewart added 17 digs, five assists, and a team-high three aces.
The Mustangs take on Jacksonville State Friday at noon at the Bama Bash, hosted by the University of Alabama. SMU will also face the Crimson Tide and McNeese State in the tournament before returning home to take on TCU in the Battle of the Iron Spike Tuesday.
