Powell, Stewart Earn Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

Sept. 14, 2009

IRVING, Texas (SMU) - Dana Powell and Sidney Stewart earned Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week honors after leading the Mustangs to a 4-0 record. SMU claimed the Inaugural Iron Spike, defeating crosstown rival TCU and won the Montana Invitational title with victories over host Montana, Arizona State and North Dakota.

Powell was named Offensive Player of the Week after finishing the week with two double-doubles, improving to a C-USA leading seven on the season. The hard-hitting sophomore was named MVP at the Montana Invitational after recording a career-high with 26 kills and a season-high 19 digs against Arizona State for her second double-double of the week. The outside hitter from Tulsa, Okla., also had a double-double against TCU with 23 kills and 11. She finished the week with 85 kills, including eight in the fourth set against Montana, averaging 4.72 kills per set. Powell also hit .284, had 45 digs, four blocks, an assist and two service aces.

Stewart was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 4.78 digs per set in the four matches. A sophomore from Houston, she recorded 86 digs, including 27 against Arizona State, just three off of her career-high. Stewart was named to the Montana Invitational All-Tournament team for her stellar performance.

The dynamic duo will lead the Mustangs in the Doubletree Classic this weekend in Moody Coliseum. SMU will open the tournament against Texas State Friday at 1:30 p.m., and will take on Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap. The Mustangs will finish the tournament against William & Mary at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

These girls deserve it! This team is very young and finding their stride.. its so great to see the recruiting paying off! As someone who knows what there talking about (compared to another that posts here who doesn't), Seifert and company have done a great job over the last several years getting tons of potential in the door.

Here's wishing the girls good luck in the upcoming home tourney!
