SMU Men’s Tennis Beats Southern Miss 6-1

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men’s tennis team improved to 5-3 Saturday, defeating Conference USA opponent Southern Miss, 6-1. For the Mustangs it was just their second home match in eight outings this season.

Artem Baradach defeated Patricio Alvarado 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot. Alvarado came into the match ranked No. 11 in the Southern region according to ITA. Pablo Perez-Espanaola improved to a team-best 6-1 this season in singles play, beating Julien Roussel, 6-4, 6-4. In doubles play SMU was able to get the point, winning two of three matches. Darren Walsh and Adham El-Effendi moved to 4-2 as a tandem this year, beating Diego and Oscar Machuca, 8-6.

“It was a great match in tough conditions,” head coach Carl Neufeld said. “Southern Miss is a great team and last year they were in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament.”

The Mustangs are scheduled to return to action on Feb. 28, at 12 p.m., when they welcome in Minnesota.
