Volleyball: Powell And Kahanek Named To AVCA All-America Team

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) - The accolades continue to roll in for SMU volleyball players Dana Powell and Kendra Kahanek, who were named to the American Volleyball Coaches' Association All-America Team.
Powell, a sophomore outside hitter, and Kahanek, a senior middle blocker, earned All-America Honorable Mention, becoming the first Mustangs in the history of SMU volleyball to earn All-America honors, after leading the Mustangs to a 19-12 record, including a school-record, 11-match home winning streak.
Powell finished the season with 440 kills, finishing fifth in Conference USA and 84th in the NCAA with 3.76 per set. The Tulsa, Okla., native reached 20 kills in four matches, including a career-high 26 on Sept. 11 against Arizona State.
Powell also finished the season ranked 15th in the conference with 3.26 digs per set, and led the league with 19 double-doubles in 30 matches. Her 440 kills ranks seventh at SMU in a single season.
Kahanek led C-USA with 149 total blocks. The middle blocker finished second in the league and 39th in the NCAA with 1.23 per set, and finished her career as the all-time leader at SMU with 530 total blocks, the only Mustangs to eclipse 500 in a career. She led the Mustangs and finished 17th in the conference, hitting .272.
