TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - The No. 27 SMU women's tennis team is the top-seed in the Conference USA Championship that begins Thursday in Tulsa. SMU (22-3) is looking to defend its C-USA title from last year's championship in Houston. The Mustangs receive a bye for the first round and will face the winner of Thursday match between No. 8 seed Southern Miss and No. 9 seed Memphis. The Mustangs' second round match is schedule for Friday at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs enter the championship with three ITA ranked singles players. Marta Lesniak is 28-5 and ranked No. 29, Aleksandra Malyarchikova is ranked No. 114 with a 24-5 mark, and Edyta Cieplucha ranks No. 116 with a 16-1 record.
The team went 6-0 against Conference USA foes this season. The top four seeds in the championship are in the ITA rankings. SMU is the highest at No. 27, Tulsa is the second seed at No. 35, Rice is the three seed at No. 47, and Marshall is the fourth seed at No. 59. SMU won 4-3 at Tulsa on Feb. 6 and defeated Rice 6-1 at the Turpin Tennis Center on April 10.
The Conference USA Championship is April 22-25 in Tulsa with the champion receiving an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on Tuesday, April 27; the tournament begins May 1.
