DALLAS (SMU) - SMU women's soccer completed their spring season in Baton Rouge, La. on Saturday when they played to a draw with the 2009 SEC West Champion and 2009 NCAA Tournament Participant LSU Tigers. The result to cap off the spring season has the SMU players and coaches excited for 2010.
"We had a very good spring and we have a lot to look forward to in 2010," said SMU Head Coach Brent Erwin. "I know our fans are ready for us to show our progress in the fall and that is a responsibility I take very seriously. This team and our coaching staff have been working very hard and we are developing as a team every day in training and in the games. The players have been absolutely fantastic this spring and are developing the mindset and skill set which are vital to our success and we are very close to being a very good team. The coaching staff and I are proud every day to be a part of this project along side our players and this spring culminating with our game vs. LSU has been a wonderful learning experience for all of us as we have played some very tough matches."
"We played better, especially in the second half. It was fun, and fun to play well against LSU, a team that was one of the best in the country," said SMU rising senior Lauren Shepherd. "I think we've grown a lot as a team this spring, became more cohesive, work together better, and have great camaraderie."
"I'm excited for 2010, I think it'll be a real good season for us, and we'll surprise a lot of people and be a contender within Conference USA," added Shepherd.
SMU scored on a deflection off the foot of Hannah Carroll against LSU, tying the game at 1.
SMU finished the 2009 season on a 4-2 run in their last six C-USA games, qualifying for the C-USA Tournament on the last day of the season.
