IRVING (SMU) - UTEP junior Anderson Mutegi and sophomore Simone du Toit of SMU were named the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week after producing NCAA Top 10 performances over the weekend and announced by the league office Tuesday. Mutegi won the 200-meters in 20.91 before clocking the nation’s sixth-best and winning time of 45.32 in the 400m, which also broke a 22-year old stadium record at the Don Kirby Invitational. du Toit earned her titles in the discus and shot put throws at the Oliver Jackson Open. Her discus throw of 54.45m (178-07) was a season-best and good for a sixth-place stance in the national rankings. She also won the shot put title with a toss of 16.35m (53-06.25).
du Toit earned a pair of titles at the Oliver Jackson Open in Abilene, Texas. The sophomore recorded the NCAA sixth-best mark of 54.45m (178-07) in the discus, marking a season-best. The Johannesburg, South Africa native collected her second title in the shot put with a toss of 16.35m (53-06.25). This is du Toit’s second career weekly honor after earning the first earlier this season on March 30.
SMU will be off for a week, before returning to action on May 13 in Orlando for the Conference USA Championships.
