SMU Leads C-USA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship
ORLANDO, Fla. — SMU holds the lead in the women's standings after seven events with 50 points. Rice (39), East Carolina (36), UTEP (32) and UAB (28) rounds out the top five in front of UCF (24.5).
The women's 3,000m steeplechase wrapped up day three of the C-USA Championships. The field of 16 runners was dominated by SMU as the Mustangs swept medalist honors as junior Silje Fjortoft took gold with a time of 10:14.67, followed by teammates Kristine Eikrem-En and Klara Bodinson finishing in 10:28.71 and 10:34.52.
Taking two of the top three honors in the women's discus was SMU. Sophomore Simone du Toit defended her crown with a toss of 54.06m (177-4"), while teammate Lauren Kuhner place third with a personal-best mark of 47.64m (156-3"). UCF senior Lakendra Thames earned silver-medalist accolades with a school- and personal-best performance of 53.14m (174-4").
Olympic Bronze medalist and seven-time All-American, Blessing Okagbare of UTEP repeated her women's long title with a leap of 6.58m (21-7.25"). The senior also clocked the fastest prelim time of 11.04 in the 100m dash to advance to Sunday's finals of the event, which will be held at 7:15 p.m.
Finishing second to Okagbare in the long jump was UCF's Sonnisha Williams (6.25m/20-06.25), followed by Tori Bowie in third-place (6.24m/20-05.75)
Scoring the top two medals in the women's pole vault was Rice's Ari Ince and Cleona Oliver. Ince, a junior, won her second-straight pole vault crown with a clearance of 3.87m (12-8.25), while Oliver, a sophomore, won silver with a mark 3.77m (12-4.5). Houston freshman Karley King finished third, clearing 3.62m (11-10.5).
Sunday's action will get underway with the women's javelin at 1 p.m. while the running events will begin at 6 p.m. with the 1,500-meter run. Tickets will be available at the event for $12 for adults and $7 for children.
