Box Score vs. Central Arkansas

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team closed out the preseason with a 2-0 defeat of the Central Arkansas Bears at Westcott Field on Wednesday morning. Freshmen Zach Barnes scored the game-winner and Juan Castillo added a goal and an assist for the Mustangs.

Barnes scored in the 24th minute for SMU after receiving a through ball from Castillo around the six yard line and chipping it in for the goal. Castillo added a goal of his own 20 seconds in to the second half. He dribbled the ball down into the goal box and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

"We have a really strong group of freshman who are eager and getting a lot of minutes," said head coach Tim McClements. "The team has really good chemistry for this early in the season; the younger guys are meshing really well with the older guys. Both (Zach Barnes and Juan Castillo) and quite a few other freshmen have put themselves in a good position for the season. It's nice for them to get their first points, and it will be even better if they can do that on Wednesday in the season opener."

The Mustang defense stayed strong and fought off the added pressure of the Bears' second-half attack, holding Central Arkansas to just two shots on goal. The senior goalkeeper Craig Hill made both stops, collecting the shutout. SMU opens the regular season against the Missouri State Bears Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.
