Women's Soccer escapes Oregon with a draw

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sun Aug 29, 2010 5:29 pm

SMU was able to hold on for a 0-0 draw at Oregon.

Oregon outshot us 22-3.

Shots on goal were 5-2 in favor of Oregon.

Overall, a good result for the Mustangs and a successful road trip.

With all the money Oregon sinks into coaches and facilities, they're going to be really good soon. I don't think they're ranked, but they're a decent team. Getting a tie at their place isn't bad at all.

I thought Oregon looked stronger than Portland.

I can't imagine the coaches are happy tonight. Only 3 shots in 110 minutes against an unranked team is never good. Our defense is obviously playing well but we can't find the back of the net and it's going to take more than one shot every 30+ minutes.

Brent's got a few more games to find an offense, otherwise it could get really ugly in conference play.
Don't confuse me with the facts; I've made up my mind.

Valid point on the lack of offense so far.

It was obvious we parked the bus at Portland, and I can only assume by the shot totals we did the same thing against Oregon. I would have gladly taken a draw and loss with only 2 goals against for this road trip against stiff competition.

But, on the larger scale, we are now 290 minutes into the season with only 1 goal (which, with apologies to Lauren Shepherd, was a fluke goal).

I wonder if we were so badly outshot because we were playing for ties on the road. I didn't see any of either game on this trip, but Portland is a terrific team (didn't they clean our clocks last year?) and I assume Oregon is a decent team, too. Who knows — maybe the strategy in both games was to park the team picture in front of the goal and pray. If so, it held up moderately well at Portland, and worked beautifully in Eugene.

With that out of the way, however, let's see some goals this weekend, Mustangs.
