IRVING, Texas (SMU) --- SMU volleyball players Dana Powell, Kelli Becerra and Sidney Stewart all were named Conference USA Players of the Week by the league office today. Dana Powell was named C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Sidney Stewart and Kelli Becerra were voted C-USA Defensive and Setter of the Week, respectively, as the Mustangs earn a share of all three weekly awards.
Powell, a junior outside hitter from Tulsa, Okla., was named C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week after posting 3.42 kills per set this weekend. Powell, who was named MVP of the Baylor Classic, tallied two double-doubles and narrowly missed a third over the weekend.
Stewart, the team's libero, notched 5.17 digs per set in the team's three matches to earn C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors. Stewart, who was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week twice last season, was especially strong against nationally-ranked Baylor, tallying 29 digs in the Mustangs win.
Becerra, a junior setter from Austin, Texas, led the team with 10.92 assists per set. Becerra also notched 38 digs in the three matches and was named to the Baylor Classic All-Tournament team.
The three honors mark the first time in program history that the Mustangs have captured all of the weekly awards in one announcement. SMU notched victories over Butler, Baylor and Stephen F. Austin as the Mustangs swept the Baylor Classic last weekend in Waco, Texas, to earn their best start since the 2007 season.
The Mustangs return to the court this weekend when they host the Doubletree Invitational at Moody Coliseum on Friday and Saturday. For tickets call 214-768-4263 or log on to www.SMUmustangs.com.
