Freshmen Burgardt and Redman Score For Mustangs

Sept. 3, 2010

Box Score vs. St. Louis

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team defeated St. Louis University 2-1 Friday night at Westcott Field. Freshmen Amanda Burgardt and Shelby Redman each scored their first career goals en route to the SMU victory.

"I felt like we got a good performance tonight from a lot of the players," said head coach Brent Erwin. "I'm glad to see Amanda and Shelby get their first goals; I think it's important to get your first goals for a team."

Burgardt got the Mustangs on the board in the 13th minute on a cross from fellow freshman Jessica Bartol. Redman netted the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute on a shot from 10 yards out.

Goalkeeper Courtney Webb picked up her second win of the season, stopping three shots on goal. Webb now holds a 0.71 goals-against average on the season.

The Mustangs recorded a season-high 24 shots on the night, while holding the Billikens to just seven.

SMU will host Davidson Sunday at noon at Westcott Field for the first ever meeting between the two schools. Purchase your tickets online at smumustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.

This freshman class does look quite promising. Courtney Smith was the best player on the field last night for SMU as well in my opinion.

With better finishing SMU could have easily been up 4-0 at halftime. SMU was totally dominant in the first half.

St. Louis didn't really seem to have much until their first goal, but after that they certainly made things interesting for the Mustangs.

It was nice to see us hold on for a good home win. Hopefully the offense will continue to progress as some more of these girls get some college experience.

Glad to see the ladies win. It would be nice if they were actually playing some competitive teams. Only 3 teams that they play are even ranked in the top 50 (as of end of Aug.).
Based on their strength of competition they should probably win the rest of their games.

GO PONIES!!!

The ags also played davidson so don't complain about us not playing quality opponents. It is probably hard to get some teams to agree to come to texas in september...it's kind of brutally hot!
