Burgardt scored for the Mustangs

Sept. 26, 2010

Box Score vs. Rice

HOUSTON (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Rice in overtime Sunday afternoon. Freshman Amanda Burgardt scored the lone goal for the Mustangs. All three of the game's goals were scored on set pieces.

Burgardt got the Mustangs on the board in the 68th minute when she headed in the ball on a free kick from Lauren Shepherd to tie the game at one. The goal was Burgardt's second of the season. The assist was Shepherd's team-leading fourth helper of the year.

Rice opened the scoring early with a goal in just the seventh minute of play. Hope Ward put Rice up 1-0 when she converted a free kick from the left side, sending the ball into the opposite side of the net.

Lauren LaGrow tallied the game-winner in the 93rd minute when she capitalized on a long free kick from the right side.

The Mustangs are now 5-4-2 on the season and have moved to 0-2-0 in Conference USA action.

SMU continues conference play against East Carolina Friday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. before facing Marshall Sunday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m.

Uh - this is not good.

Two conference losses already with one to Rice?

I was afraid the lack of offense would catch up to us eventually. Hopefully we can turn it around quickly.

Doesn't get any easier next weekend, with road games at ECU and Marshall.
ECU was pretty good last year, right?
Good luck, Mustangs!

Where are the usual suspects who are calling for Erwin's head!

Bartol and Redman, torn ACLs, Baum had surgery to repair cheek bone injury, Smith has badly bruised shoulder bone. Others are limping along with chronic stuff. But midfield is gone.

The injuries are so unfortunate. The girls were playing sooooooooo well!!! Then Barton gets taken down from behind (torn ACL) and Redman might have torn her ACL in practice. I hope the girls can pull together and get back on track!

That really sucks for Jessica.

I was wondering why Courtney Smith has been playing reduced minutes because she has been the best player on the pitch in the matches I have seen, but for both Bartol and Redman to have ACLs in their freshman year just plain sucks.

Hopefully we can regroup and make a run at getting into the conference tournament.

Too bad about the injuries. However, good coaches find a way to win with the talent available. You can't base your team's success on just one or two players. Let's try to win CUSA and then more.

GO PONIES!!!

blood-red-pony,

having read your responses for a while now, I have made my conclusions on your mental abilities and general agenda. if you were at all involved/in-touch as you profess, you would know there are 3 starters out and one very limited in play due to injuries. not just one or two. for the simpleton in you, i'll do the math and count it as a total of 4, which equates to 40% of the field player positions. (i'm not going to explain how I got that for you). in any case, that represents a significant portion of the starting / playing resources. it's unfortunate and we wish these players a speedy and full recovery.

Red that's a pretty lame effort. Imagine the Lakers without Kobe, LA Galaxy without Donovan, the Penguins without Crosby, the Capitals without Ovechkin. See how good Cleveland is this year without Labron. Look how average the Bulls became after MJ left. You lose a key player or two or 3 or 4, wins can become losses real fast. The only exceptions are teams that are so deep that their second string is better than most team's first strings. Even Man U has struggled when star players are injured.
GO PONIES AS WELL!

putrid-red-pony -

too bad you don't realize there is not a correlation between number of posts and expertise.

your agenda is clear. you profess to hide behind a thin veil of support, when in fact you want to tear the place down...even your simple signature line of "Go Ponies!!!" is an affront and insult because of your true nature.

and don't assume i didn't include the keeper...i was clear. in standard soccer parlance, field players usually are distinguished from keepers...if you were even a partial expert you would know this. and one final tip for your future rants, the end line is not called the "back line", try another sport for that, like hopscotch or something similar that's up your alley. In soccer it's called the "end line" or "goal line".
