SMU vs. SOUTH CAROLINA
SMU is 5-5-2 all-time against South Carolina. Last season, the Gamecocks defeated the Mustangs 3-2 in double-overtime. Josue Soto gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with his goal in the 47th minute. A crazy sequence of three goals in three minutes started when South Carolina tied the game in the 85th minute. SMU responded in the 86th minute before the Gamecocks scored in the 88th minute to force OT. South Carolina tallied a goal in the 103rd minute to win the game.
MUSTANGS NO. 8 IN NSCAA POLL
The Mustangs are No. 8 in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com National Rankings. SMU ranks second in the Midwest regional rankings, behind No. 5 Tulsa.
MUSTANGS TAKEN DOWN BY KNIGHTS
SMU suffered its first defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss at C-USA rival UCF Oct. 2. The Knights opened the scoring early with a goal in the 12th minute of play. Soto tallied his third goal of the season in the 27th minute to tie the game at one. UCF netted the game-winner in the 66th minute to end the Mustangs' undefeated run.
SWEET HOME ALABAMA
The Mustangs picked up wins over UAB and Jacksonville in Birmingham Sept. 24-26. SMU opened Conference USA play with a 3-2 victory over UAB Sept. 24. Castillo opened the scoring in the 25th minute, with his team-leading seventh goal of the season and sixth in as many games. Junior Arthur Ivo picked up his third goal of the year in the 43rd minute when he one-timed a shot from just outside the 18 to give the Mustangs a two goal lead. In the 53rd minute, Soto put SMU up 3-0 with his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner. The Mustangs fought off a late comeback attempt by the Blazers as UAB scored in the 82nd and 86th minutes to bring the game to within one.
SMU defeated Jacksonville 2-1 with a come-from-behind overtime win Sept. 26. The
Mustangs fell behind early on a well-executed Jacksonville cross in the 13th minute of play. Robbie Derschang started the Mustang rally with his goal in the 70th minute to tie the game at one. In the 93rd minute, Ivo completed the comeback as he scored the game-winner for the Mustangs.
MR. JUAN-DERFUL
Juan Castillo has had quite an impressive start to his collegiate career. Through 10 games, the freshman leads the team in goals (7), points (16) and game-winning goals (3). Castillo has been named NSCAA National Player of the Week, is a two-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week and has twice been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
NEXT GAME
SMU hosts C-USA foe Marshall Oct. 10. The teams are tied 2-2-0 in the all-time series between the two schools. In 2010, Marshall holds a 7-2-2 record on the season and is 3-0-0 in C-USA action. Both of their losses were 2-1 overtime defeats.
