It's time to take notice, people — you NEED to get out and watch this team play. Marshall had a very impressive team tonight, and to beat them with 10 guys was amazing.

Whoever it was who set up the game-winner made the Marshall defense look ridiculous!

Men's Soccer Tops Marshall 2-1 In OT
Castillo and Barnes score for Mustangs

Oct. 10, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 8 SMU men's soccer team defeated Marshall 2-1 in overtime Sunday night at Westcott Field. Freshmen Juan Castillo and Zach Barnes scored for the Mustangs. With the win, SMU moves to 11-1-0 on the season and is now 3-1-0 in Conference USA action.

"It was a tough one," said head coach Tim McClements of the win. "Marshall, give our hat off to them, because they put in a really good shift. They scored a goal on a set piece, a throw in, that we'd been working all week to prevent. We knew they were going to be tough. We knew we had a lot of possession in the first half, but when we went in and looked at the stats, shots are even, and you're in a battle."

Castillo opened the scoring with a goal in the 25th minute. Junior Arthur Ivo fed the ball to Castillo who fired a bullet from 20 yards out into the far upper 90. The goal was Castillo's team-leading eighth of the season.

Barnes netted the overtime game-winner in the 95th minute. Freshman Robbie Derschang danced around a few Marshall defenders in the left side of the box before crossing the ball to Barnes who headed in the ball for the win. The goal was Barnes' fourth tally of the season and second game-winner.

Marshall's goal came in the 40th minute on a long throw in from Tom Jackson into the goal box. Diego Ayala connected, heading home the ball to knot the game at one.

With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, goalkeeper Craig Hill punched a shot by Marshall's Mat Butler up and over the crossbar to keep the game tied at one. Hill finished the night with five saves for the Mustangs.

SMU's Leone Cruz received two yellow cards on the evening, one in the 31st minute and the other in the 80th minute, leaving the Mustangs to play down a man for the final 15 minutes of the match. Cruz will have to sit out of SMU's next game.

"It just shows our persistence and our depth, being able to play a man down," said McClements. "It was a difficult match, but we're happy to get the victory."

SMU hosts No. 5 Tulsa Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field. Tulsa is 7-3-0 on the season and 1-1 in C-USA. The Hurricane have lost to No. 1 Akron, No. 11 Creighton and No. 20 South Carolina. Purchase your tickets online at smumustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.

Very unfortunate we lose Cruz for the Tulsa game but we seem to have a lot of depth. Tulsa lost to both S. Carolina and Creighton both of whom we beat in close matches. The Tulsa match should be a great game.

That game against Tulsa is the reason we're not doing a PonyFans LIVE show next week.

It's also the "Pack the House" game for men's soccer, where members of other teams are asked to come out and make a lot of noise.

Come out to Westcott Field Wednesday night. Tulsa always has a decent cluster of fans at Westcott Field — this is the time to get a horde of PonyFans out there and completely drown them out.
