Freshman Zach Barnes Named C-USA Player Of The Week

IRVING, Texas (SMU) - SMU men's soccer player Zach Barnes was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. The freshman midfielder tallied two goals, including an overtime game-winner, last week as the Mustangs defeated C-USA rivals South Carolina and Marshall. No. 8 SMU is now 11-1-0 on the season and holds a 3-1-0 mark in C-USA action.
Barnes netted an impressive breakaway goal in the final minute of play as SMU defeated No. 20 South Carolina 3-1 on Wednesday. Barnes received a pass at midfield and took off, slowing down to make a move around the goalie before firing off his third goal of the season. On Sunday, Barnes headed home the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 win against Marshall. SMU was forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game after suffering a red card in the 80th minute. Barnes headed in the ball from four yards out on a cross in the 95th minute to lift the Mustangs for the win. The tally was his fourth of the season and second game-winner.
Barnes earns the weekly conference honor for the first time in his young career.
Barnes was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week for his efforts.
