SMU Tops Marshall, 3-2; Powell Achieves Career Marks

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (SMU) --- The SMU volleyball team defeated Marshall in five sets (25-23, 25-14, 24-26, 23-25, 15-11) on Sunday afternoon. With today's match, Dana Powell has eclipsed both 1,000 career kills and digs.
Powell's 18 kills and 27 digs in the match moved her into the 1,000/1,000 career kills and digs club, which only six previous athletes in SMU history have attained. Powell has accumulated 1,011 kills and 1,009 digs during her time on the Hilltop. The junior is joined by teammate Kathryn Wilkerson as the only two active C-USA players to attain the kills and digs feat.
Wilkerson, the C-USA active career kills leader, added a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Jessica Oliver helped bolster the Mustang offense with 12 kills.
Kelli Becerra tied for a match high with 50 assists. Becerra added in 14 digs to mark her 11th double-double this season.
Sidney Stewart helped lead a Mustang defense that held Marshall to a .133 hitting percentage. The junior libero tallied 23 digs for C-USA's leading defense (17.59 digs per set).
SMU moves to 16-4 overall this season, which is the best record through 20 matches in program history. With today's win, the Mustangs retain second place in C-USA with an 8-1 record this season.
The Mustangs return to the court next Friday and Saturday with road matches at Rice and Houston.
