Women's Soccer Falls To Memphis 3-0
Oct. 17, 2010
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fell to Memphis 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. With the loss, the Mustangs move to 10-5-2 on the year and 5-3-0 in Conference USA action.
"We just didn't have the goods today," said head coach Brent Erwin. "We're a good team. We were on a good streak, and today we just didn't play very well. We'll come out next week and we'll get back on a streak again. Sometimes good teams have bad days, and I think we had that today."
Memphis opened the scoring with a goal just 4:53 in to the game. After SMU defender Katherine Cox made a stop on the initial header, Memphis forward Ashley Berra headed the ball in for a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added another goal just over two minutes in to the second half when Lizzy Simonin shot the ball from the top of the box following a corner kick.
In the 83rd minute, Memphis midfielder Vendula Strnadova fired a shot from the top of the box into the far upper 90 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Memphis is now 11-3-2 on the season and 5-1-2 in conference play.
The Mustangs head east to take on C-USA foes Southern Miss and UCF. The Golden Eagles are 3-11-2 on the year and 0-7-1 in C-USA action. The Knights hold a 10-3-3 record overall and are 5-1-2 in conference play.

Giving up early goals in both halves is a recipe for disaster...
We are still in good shape in the conference, although a win would have put us in serious striking distance of the top seed in the conference tournament.
Hopefully the upcoming road trip will be successful!

Why were we playing a 4-5-1 when we've been utilizing the 4-4-2 so well? I know injuries have hampered us but one up top doesn't allow a counter. We were on our heels the whole game.

Actually if your 1 player up top can hold the ball well, it allows for counter attacks!! You can then send your OM flying wide and CM's (at least 2) as support while still having defensive structure.

agreed...IF the player up top can hold it...but she couldn't. By the time we could recover to attack she was stripped most of the time.

Oldkeeper was wondering when you would start up with your diatribe. Glad the girls were able to keep you at bay this long. I would love to say welcome back. But I hope you do not get to stay long. Funny how we didn't hear from you when the girls were winning. How do you sleep at night? Attacking poor innocent girls, you should be ashamed of yourself. Tsk Tsk Tsk!

I’m glad Oldkeeper is back; I’m able to take away important life lessons from his posts (opinions):
Don’t ever say anything good or reinforce positive results but be the first to give your opinion and jump on less than favourable outcomes...

Well that's a bit condescending, isn't it? One of Brent's former players is quite happy at MTSU.
More importantly though, does this mean we're not invited to your tailgate extravaganza?
Look none of us are being critical of the players; they have jelled as a team and are playing their hearts out. What we do question is the problem our coaching staff has adjusting and making corrections. We get out-coached and that's gonna bite us down the stretch. 3-0 is a spanking any way you look at it.

The team's only shot at making it to the NCAA tournament is to WIN the Conference Tournament. Losing 3-0 to Memphis is not a good sign. Hopefully this team can win when it really matters.

A good road trip this weekend and we will be in striking distance of the top seed in the conference tournament since Houston/Memphis and Houston/Rice are still on the schedule.
I would like to think we can take care of business against Southern Miss and Tulsa.
The game Sunday at UCF is huge!
