Women's Swim Defeats Houston In First Dual Meet

Oct. 23, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's swim team downed Houston 172-122 in the first dual match of the season Friday night. The Mustangs won 12 of the meet's 16 events.

Freshman Deanna Matthews led all Mustangs with three event titles. Matthews won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.27, besting the nearest competitor by more than four seconds. She then took first in the 200 yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:00.08. Matthews also claimed a win in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:22.69

Fellow newcomer Alice McCall won two events for the Mustangs. The long distance specialist took first in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:14.97) and in the 500 yard freestyle (5:04.72).

Junior Denisa Smolenova also won two individual events, the 200 yard butterfly (2:01.38) and the 100 yard butterfly (55.80). Smolenova also swam the third leg of the winning 400 yard medley relay squad. The team clocked in with a time of 3:51.57.

Senior Audra Egenolf earned top honors in the one-meter diving event, with a score of 294.52. She also claimed second in the three-meter diving, earning a score of 309.30.

The Mustangs also won the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle events.
