Oct. 23, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's swim team fell to Air Force 124-119 in the first meet of the season Saturday morning. Diver Richard Cornelius qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships with his performance in the meet.

"We had a great atmosphere in Perkins today," said head coach Eddie Sinnott. "We are very proud of Richard. For him to qualify for zones in his first meet is an attribute to all of the hard work he has put in. On the swimming side, we had some good early season swims, but the guys are determined to get faster. We look forward to giving them a chance to do that next weekend in Mansfield."

Cornelius won the three-meter springboard event (334.13) as well as the one-meter dive (288.30). With his score in the three-meter dive, Cornelius qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships in March.

Sophomore Mindaugas Sadauskas picked up wins in the 50 yard freestyle (20.79) and the 100 yard freestyle (45.35). Sadauskas also swam the final leg of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay squad. The team clocked in with a time of 1:23.83, as Sadauskas swam a split of 20.29.

Freshman Matt Roney opened his collegiate career with two first place finishes, as Roney won both the 100 butterfly (50.52) and the 200 freestyle (1:41.65).

SMU competes in the Southwest College Invite Oct. 29 and 30 in Mansfield, Texas.
