Jan. 25, 2011

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Former SMU women's tennis standout Patricia Zerdan is among the players who will represent the United States at the 31st ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the USTA announced. The event is the senior tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, with the top American amateur tennis players representing their countries in men's and women's age groups from 35 to 55-plus. This year's event will be held February 21-26, in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Zerdan will lead the Suzanne Lenglen Cup team, as the top ranked player in the World and in the USA. Zerdan had a perfect year in the 35s, winning all four USTA Category I Championships in 35 singles to earn a "Gold Slam". The USA finished fourth in the Lenglen Cup competition in 2010 in Mexico City.

Zerdan played at SMU from 1994-97 and ranks sixth in career singles victories (77). She finished ranked in 65th or better nationally in her final three seasons on the Hilltop. Zerdan won 33 matches in 1996-97, which ranks fourth all-time at SMU. Zerdan teamed with Renee Greyvensteyn to set the SMU record of 49 career doubles wins by a tandem. Her .748 career singles winning percentage (77-26) ranks sixth for the Mustangs.

The United States will be defending championships in five of the 10 divisions at the Men's and Women's Seniors Championships. American teams finished in the top three in eight of the ten divisions last year.

The ITF Seniors World Team Championships is the most coveted team event on the ITF Seniors circuit. Since its inception in 1981, the number of competitors in this event has increased each year. In 1993, the ITF made the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups -- Seniors (35-55+) and Super-Seniors (60-80+ for men and 60-75+ for women). The Super-Seniors competition will be held later this year.

Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place February 27 - March 6 at the same location.
