Men's Tennis Downed By No. 8 Baylor

Feb. 21, 2011

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team was defeated by No. 8 Baylor 6-1 on Sunday at the Dallas Country Club. With the loss, the Mustangs are now 2-3 on the season.

"Baylor's a very tough team," head coach Carl Neufeld said. "I'm very excited about the way we competed; we had a number of guys with personal best performances. Baylor was a great test for us. I'm really excited about the progress we've made."

Junior David Costa picked up the lone point for the Mustangs, defeating Dennis Lengsfeld 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot.

No. 36 Artem Baradach suffered his first loss of the season, falling to No. 27 John Peers 6-1, 7-5. Baradach is now 4-1 in singles play this year.

Bryan Griffin lost to Sergio Ramirez 6-4, 7-6(5), and Adham el-Effendi was defeated by Jordan Rux 6-0, 6-4. No. 110 Roberto Maytin downed Mischa Nowicki 6-1, 6-4. Gaston Cuadranti took Kike Grangeiro to three sets before losing 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-3.

In doubles play, Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood downed the duo of Jordan Rux and Lengsfeld 8-6. The Bears won the doubles point, however, as the No. 7 pairing of Peers and Maytin defeated el-Effendi and Baradach 8-1, while No. 32 duo Bley and Grangeiro beat Nowicki and Cuadranti 9-7.

The Mustangs host Utah State on Thursday at the Turpin Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
