DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KAITLYN EIDSON, SMU
Senior, D, Katy, Texas
Eidson played a key role in SMU's 2-0-0 start in Conference USA play. On Friday, she scored the game-winner against No. 19 UCF, the C-USA preseason favorite and defending regular-season champion, with a header in the 63rd minute. On top of that, she was crucial in anchoring a backline that shutout a potent UCF attack, which outshot SMU 13-5. The 1-0 win ended the Knights' six-match unbeaten streak. The win was also SMU's first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 15, 2002, when the team knocked off No. 11 Texas 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Eidson continued her solid played in central defense, as SMU held Southern Miss scoreless through just over 80 minutes on Sunday. After giving up a goal in the 81st minute, Eidson put the game out of reach with her second headed goal of the weekend in the 86th minute. The Mustang backline held USM to only three shots on the day. This is Eidson's first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor, but second weekly honor of her career as she was named Offensive Player of the Week in 2010.
