Eidson Earns National Accolades
Sept. 28, 2011
DALLAS (SMU) - On Monday, it was announced that SMU central defender Kaitlyn Eidson was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. The senior from Katy, Texas has since also garnered national recognition from both Soccer America and CollegeSoccer360.com.
Eidson was one of two C-USA players named to the Soccer America Women's Team of the Week, while also earning a spot on the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll.
Last weekend, Eidson was instrumental in helping SMU get off to a 2-0-0 start in Conference USA play. On Friday, she scored the game-winner against then-No. 19 UCF, the C-USA preseason favorite and defending regular-season champion, by redirecting a shot off of a Courtney Smith free kick in the 63rd minute. On top of that, she was crucial in anchoring a backline that shutout a potent UCF attack, which outshot SMU 13-5. The 1-0 win ended the Knights' six-match unbeaten streak, and was also SMU's first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 15, 2002, when the team knocked off No. 11 Texas 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Two days later, Eidson continued her solid played in central defense, as SMU held Southern Miss scoreless through just over 80 minutes on Sunday. After giving up a goal in the 81st minute, Eidson put the game out of reach with a header goal off of a corner kick by Mallory Baum in the 86th minute. The Mustang backline held USM to only three shots on the day.
This weekend, the Mustangs host in-state rivals Rice (6-3-1, 1-1-0) on Sept. 30 and Houston (4-6-0, 1-1-0) on Oct. 2. Kickoff for Friday is set for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field, with Sunday's match starting at 2 p.m.
Friday night versus Rice is designated as $1 ticket night at Westcott Field. Season tickets are $24. Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
