SMU Drops Season-Opener To San Diego State In Overtime, 1-0
Strong Defense Not Enough To Overcome Aztecs On The Road

Aug. 17, 2012

SAN DIEGO (SMU) - A strong defensive effort was not enough for SMU to come out of its opening weekend with a point. San Diego State defeated SMU, 1-0, at the SDSU Sports Deck on Friday evening.

Regardless of the outcome, which was determined 14 minutes into overtime after a Megan Jurado goal for the Aztecs, Head Coach Chris Petrucelli was proud of the way his team played.

"We fought hard," Petrucelli said. "I have to give them credit. They gave everything they had, we just couldn't finish it off."

The game was deadlocked after the initial 90 minutes, after which Mustangs goalkeeper Lauren Bodden had already tallied eight saves. Overall, the Aztecs outshot the Mustangs, 10-to-2.

SMU was back on its heels much of the game, but the back line showed strength and energy that Petrucelli appreciated, and he thinks that kind of play can mean something as the season progresses.

"If we play with that kind of effort, we'll win a lot of games," Petrucelli said.

Both teams were playing their season-openers.

SMU returns to the hilltop for its home-opener on Friday, Aug. 24 at Westcott Field. The Mustangs will take on Oral Roberts, whom SMU has never lost to at home. Tickets are available by calling 214-SMU-GAME or by visiting http://www.smumustangs.com/tickets.

Yeah, it's a shame we couldn't start the season with a win after building up so much momentum in the preseason, but it's nice to hear the team played well.

The SDSU release has some more information and a link to a photo gallery where you can at least get a glimpse of our 2012 uniforms:

As mentioned in another thread, it is tough to play in California. SMU now has six straight losses in California (dating back to the win against St. Mary's in 2008).
I imagine it is even more challenging to face opening a season out there.

Anyway, now it's back home to get ready for the home opener against Oral Roberts next Friday. ORU also lost in double overtime last night (2-1 at home to North Texas).

Saw where someone tweeted a picture of Dez Bryant with some of the girls soccer team. Some had Nike unis, not sure if game day. Secondly, why was he visiting ?

Cowboys play in San Diego tonight. Maybe they were in the same hotel or something?

ORU will come into this one 0-1-1 after a 0-0 draw at UMKC today.

We really should put it on ORU Friday but we still have to do it.

Go Ponies!
