NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - Caroline Young scored a team-high 13 kills at Tulane Sunday, but the Green Wave had three players in double-digits to take a 3-0 win over the Mustangs (26-24, 25-22, 25-21). Freshman Abbey Bybel added seven kills and both players each hit .333, combining for just three attack errors in the loss.
Tulane set the tone for the match in the first set, getting five straight kills to erase a 23-19 SMU lead, four from Milica Jovic who finished with 13 kills. The Green Wave had the first opportunity for set point, which the Mustangs fought off, but Tulane score the next two points for the 26-24 win and the advantage in the match.
The second set was even closer than the first. The Mustangs scored the first three points, but Tulane tied the set 5-5. From that point on, neither team led by more than two points until SMU scored three in a row for a 21-18 lead. The Green Wave washed the lead away just as quick, scoring the next three to even the score. Tulane went on to score four of the next five points for a 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
SMU held the largest lead of the match in the third set, outscoring the Green Wave 12-6 early in the set, but Tulane eventually tied the set 15-15. The Mustangs (9-17, 6-8 Conference USA) didn't lead by more than one point, falling 25-21 to give the Green Wave (6-19, 4-10 C-USA) the victory.
The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum on Friday, taking on Houston at 7 p.m. SMU will host Rice in the final conference match of the season, celebrating Senior Day before the 1 p.m. match.
