No. 20 SMU (10-5-4) hosts the Winthrop Eagles in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night at Westcott Field (7pm).

Winthrop (12-8-1) finished in sixth place in the Big South Conference, but got on a roll in their conference tournament where they defeated top-seeded No. 8 Coastal Carolina in the final to gain an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. On the way to the final, the Eagles defeated third-seeded Liberty and second-seeded Radford as well.

In 21 games this season, Winthrop has scored 38 goals and allowed 35. Their top scorer Alex Isern has 9 goals and 8 assists.

The only common opponent is Campbell who is also in the Big South and finished fifth this season. SMU drew 1-1 at Westcott in the season opener with the Fighting Camels. Winthrop lost 5-1 at Campbell in a mid-season battle. Winthrop's RPI is 73, which is in the range of Marshall and UCF for what little comparison that can give between the conferences...

The big question for SMU will be the health of Tyler Engel and Damian Rosales. Neither player made an appearance in the C-USA tournament.

Go Ponies!

If we get by Winthrop, we get Louisville and the next seed in the bracket is Marquette, two future BE opponents. It will be a good indoctrination to BE futbol. If we manage to get out of that bracket, we get the pleasure of playing probably Maryland. Had we beaten Tulsa, we might have been the 11 seed and had a much easier run. Oh well, you have to win them all, right?

What's going on with Engel and Rosales and is there a good chance they'll be able to play?

Don't know anything about Rosales. Engel got clipped pretty [deleted] the back of the ankle/heel in the Memphis game so I assume that is what he is dealing with.

The game tonight was pretty much a microcosm of the 2012 season.
