Nov. 19, 2012
IRVING, Texas (SMU) - Gabrielle Wilkins was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week after playing her first game with the Mustangs, conference officials announced Monday. The guard from Garland, Texas led SMU to a 67-63 win over rival North Texas Thursday night in Moody Coliseum.
Wilkins made four of seven field goal attempts and went 3-for-5 at the free throw line for 11 points in her collegiate debut. The 5-9 Garland High School graduate also grabbed five rebounds and had two steals with an assist. She scored her first three points during SMU's 12-0 run to take a 14-9 lead in the first half, sinking the free throw to convert the and-one situation after making a layup to pull SMU to within one, 9-8.
Her 11 points against North Texas is the third double-digit scoring performance among SMU freshmen and fourth among members of the 2012-13 signing class, which was rated as of the top 20 classes in the country. Freshman Farrin Bell scored 12 points against Alcorn State in the opener and had 12 against North Texas, and Korina Baker scored 12 against Texas Southern.
The Mustangs face Arkansas-Little Rock at home tonight at 5:30 p.m. and take on SIU-Edwardsville in the first round of the Thanksgiving tournament in Moody Coliseum on Friday at 5 p.m. For tickets, call 214-SMU-GAME or visit SMUMustangs.com/tickets.
