Espericueta Tied For Fourth To Lead SMU
April 22, 2013
GULF SHORES, Ala. (SMU) - Felicia Espericueta finished at even par, tying her for fourth after the first day at the Conference USA Championships. SMU is also fourth in the team standings.
Espericueta tallied two birdies against two bogeys during her round. She was one of just two players to birdie the par-three eighth hole. Jennifer Park and Maria Elena Villamil are both in the top 15, tied for 14th at three-over. Park rallied to notch two birdies over the last four holes to finish her round.
SMU performed well on the back nine, giving Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland encouragement heading into Tuesday.
"We finished well today," Sutherland said. "I was proud of how Jennifer and Elena finished their rounds. I think our determination was better, and we started to pay attention to the greens and the conditions. We need to start out our round tomorrow with good golf and not just wait to see what happens."
Tulane leads the tournament by two strokes over East Carolina. UCF holds a one-stroke advantage over SMU for third.
The first groups in Tuesday's second round will tee off at 7:45 a.m. CDT. Memphis, Tulsa and SMU will start on hole one, with Tulane, East Carolina and UCF following off the No. 1 tee at 8:35 a.m. Old Dominion, Southern Miss and UTEP will begin on No. 10 at 7:45 a.m., while UAB and Marshall will go off No. 10 at 8:35 a.m.
The winner of the C-USA Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. Live stats can be found here.
