Sprinter Will Join Hammer Thrower Murphy In Eugene
May 24, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) - SMU sprinter Stephanie Kalu advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 100m dash with a strong performance on night two of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Rounds at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday, May 24. Kalu crossed in 11.75 seconds, fourth in her heat, and will now move on to the finals next month.
Kalu and teammate Elizabeth Murphy, who advanced to the NCAA Championships by taking eighth in the hammer throw on day one, will now participate in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.
When the meet continues tomorrow, Kalu and teammates Isis Wilson, Craishia Washington and Rachel Scruggs will look to move on in the 4x100-meter relay, while Helena Perez, C-USA outdoor shot put champion, and javelin thrower Lucija Cvitanovic will also compete for Championship berths on Saturday.
Mustangs Rayann Chin and Lisa Egarter missed out on chances to advance in the discus and high jump, respectively, on Friday. Chin's throw of 47.52m and Egarter's 1.70m leap were just short of the needed marks.
