Scovill To Play Professionally For Thróttur In Iceland
Former SMU Forward Signs Contract To Play In Reykjavik

Aug. 7, 2013

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) - Former SMU forward Kenzie Scovill has signed a contract to play for Thróttur Reykjavik in Iceland, officially beginning her professional career after finishing her last season as a Mustang in November.

Scovill has always fantasized about turning her favorite sport into her job, and is thrilled that she is getting the opportunity.

"It feels amazing to know that I've reached my goal and have actually turned the dream I always dreamed about as a little kid into reality," Scovill said. "Signing the contract and being able to call myself a professional soccer play was so surreal, exciting and nerve-wracking all at once. I didn't even believe it was happening until I was here, in Iceland, and at my first practice with the team."

Thróttur plays in Úrvalsdeild, the most competitive league in Iceland, but is currently at the bottom of its league table and in danger of being relegated to a lower tier. With just eight league games remaining, the squad needed help at forward to try to climb back up the standings and Scovill believes she can help right away.

"I just got here last Wednesday (July 31) and have only had about three practices with them, but all of the girls have been very welcoming and I think we have a lot of potential to finish the season strong and finish higher up in the division and out of relegations."

Scovill scored 22 goals in 71 games on the Hilltop, leading the Mustangs in goals in three of her four seasons. The Lewisville, Texas native also added six assists during her career. According to Scovill, SMU has had a huge influence on her - both on the pitch and off.

"I'm so thankful to have had the opportunities that I've had, especially given the opportunity and experience of playing Division I soccer at SMU," Scovill said. "My career at SMU helped me grow as a player and a person, and has really set a great foundation for me to succeed in all of my future endeavors.

"My SMU family, the team I will always represent, have pushed me, supported me, and helped me get to where I am today because without them I doubt I'd be here in Iceland. SMU has shown me how to work and mesh with a new team fast, given me the ability to overcome setbacks like taking a loss or tie you didn't want or coming back from an injury. My SMU family has taught me to be fearless and confident on the pitch because you know you have 10 other players fighting with you and for you on the field."

Scovill hopes for success in Reykjavik, but also has her sights set beyond the northern-most capital city in the world. The opportunity in Iceland for Scovill has proven that dreams can come true, and the forward does not look to wake up anytime soon. She hopes to return to the United States to try out for the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League) someday, but more than anything, Scovill just wants to keep playing.

"Soccer has been a part of me for as long as I can remember and I'm not ready to call it quits," Scovill said.
