SAN MARCOS, Texas (SMU) - The Mustangs improved to 2-1 with a sweep over Lamar Saturday morning in the Texas State Classic (25-17, 25-13, 25-18). Senior Maddie Lozano scored a match-high 10 kills and posted seven of SMU's eight blocks.
Abbey Bybel and Caroline Young each finished with seven kills for the Mustangs, and Avery Acker had 26 assists. Morgan Heise and Carla Armstrong led SMU with six digs apiece. For Lamar, Cortney Moore and Nicole Parish both scored seven kills, but no one else managed more than two.
SMU kept the Cardinals from extending the match in the third, halting a late charge in the set. With SMU leading 17-11, Lamar cut the lead to two, 18-16. The Mustangs held the Cardinals to just two more points, winning the set 25-18 to complete the sweep.
The Mustangs outscored the Cardinals 13-3 over the first 16 points of the first set, building a 10-point lead Lamar was never able to cut smaller than seven as SMU cruised to a 25-17 win in the first set. Lozano had six kills in the set, nearly matching her previous season-high eight kills in a four-set match against Texas State. SMU only allowed Lamar to score consecutive points four times, while the Mustangs had a string of seven straight points scored.
In the second set, it was an 18-6 run to give the Mustangs a 21-8 lead on their way to a 25-13 win for a 2-0 lead in the match. Morgan Heise and Caroline Young were the only two SMU players to serve on multiple rotations, with Heise held the serve for eight points on her second turn serving before the Cardinals won the serve back. Young and Abbey Bybel were the top scorers for the Mustangs in the second set, each earning four kills.
SMU plays its next match Tuesday against Baylor in Waco, Texas, at 6 p.m. The Mustangs then host the SMU Classic on Sept. 6 and 7, playing in Dallas for the first time this season.
